Sports

Sports have a unique power to empower individuals of all abilities, fostering essential life skills such as decision-making, leadership, teamwork, and stress management. Beyond personal development, sports contribute to social cohesion, bridging divides and promoting inclusivity. However, factors such as gender, socioeconomic status, age, and accessibility continue to limit participation.

Problem

In Türkiye, while female participation in sports is increasing, disparities remain. TUIK data shows the male-to-female ratio in sports participation improved from 69-31% in 2015 to 65-35% in 2024, with a similar shift among licensed athletes (69-31% to 64-36%).

This progress is partly due to the success of female athletes in sports like volleyball, archery, and football, along with broader societal advancements in gender equality. However, personal, familial, socioeconomic, and environmental barriers still limit women’s full participation.

Türkiye also has one of Europe’s lowest sports participation rates – 88% of the population is inactive, compared to 47% in the EU. Only 3% engage in sports for over five hours per week (EU: 18%), and just 4% do muscle-building exercises at least once a week (EU: 26%).

Our Approach

In 2025, Türkiye Mozaik Foundation launched the Sports Giving Circle, a donor-led initiative that funds grassroots organisations working to increase access to sports. Through this initiative, we provide direct funding to support organisations creating impact on the ground.

Through our grantmaking, we prioritise:

  • Participation of groups facing social exclusion in all areas of life,
  • Increasing the visibility of groups facing discrimination,
  • Equal access to sports opportunities,
  • Empowering communities through sports,
  • Promoting solidarity among people through sports.

How Does the Giving Circle Work?

A giving circle is a group of individuals who pool their money, time, skills, and networks for a cause. Members of the Sports Giving Circle actively mobilise their personal and professional connections to raise funds.

Türkiye Mozaik Foundation supports the Circle both in running their fundraising activities and in directing the mobilised resources to grassroots organisations. Members are directly involved in the decision-making process. Donations are pooled into a pot, and the Circle then selects the charities or projects to support.

In other words, members of the giving circle are at the heart of both mobilising and distributing resources. Our role is to ensure that the process operates smoothly, transparently, safely, and efficiently.

To initiate this work, we committed £25,000 as seed funding.

In addition, through a generous in kind contribution of one of our donors, we also provided Galatasaray Solo Il Gala Osimhen Boxes to Karaçay Gençlik Spor Kulübü worth £13,500.

Current Portfolio

In the first cohort of our funding cycle in 2025, we are partnering with the Association for Justice and Rights in Sports (Sporda Adalet ve Haklar için Sahadayız Derneği – SAHADAYIZ) for two small grant programmes:

Pusula: Sports Participation Support Programme for Children in Antalya

The Support for Girls Association (Kız Çocuklarına Destek Derneği) works to ensure equal opportunities for girls by raising awareness, building partnerships, and strengthening support systems.

With our grant, the association launched the Pusula/Compass: Sports Participation Support Programme for Children in Antalya expanding girls’ access to safe and inclusive sports activities. The programme provides in-kind grants that cover costs such as equipment, facility rental, and transportation, with payments made directly to suppliers.

In the first funding cycle, four projects promoting children’s social participation through sports are being supported:

  • Demre Girls Empowered in Football

Establishing a girls’ football team in Demre to overcome gender barriers in a male-dominated sport, while supporting the physical, social, and emotional development of girls aged 6–14.

  • Participatory and Peaceful Outdoor Sports for Girls

Introducing girls aged 6–11 in Döşemealtı to outdoor sports such as bouldering, zip-line, and slack-line, encouraging solidarity and self-confidence in a safe and inclusive environment.

  • Aim for Your Dream with Floor Curling

Expanding access to sports for disadvantaged girls aged 9–14 in Kepez and nearby rural areas through floor curling, a low-cost, safe, and inclusive sport, to strengthen confidence, teamwork, leadership, and belonging.

  • Champion Girls Raising Future Champions

Supporting the sports careers of two successful young female sailors, while providing basic sailing training and certification to eight other girls, promoting peer learning and equal opportunities in sailing.

Each £1,400 funds a new project in Antalya.

SAHADAYIZ promotes equality, inclusion, and access to rights in sports, with a focus on child protection, gender equality, and migration.

With our grant, SAHADAYIZ launched the Sports Grant Programme to help underrepresented groups continue their sports activities and use sport as a tool for empowerment and participation. The programme provides in-kind support—including equipment, facility rental, transportation, and capacity building—to strengthen organisations’ work and remove barriers to access.

It prioritises initiatives that advance inclusion, equal opportunities, and rights through sport, particularly for communities facing discrimination or limited access. In the first funding cycle, four projects were selected, including two from earthquake-affected regions.

The selected projects are:

  • “Strengthening Through Sports, Overcoming Barriers” – Bartın Otizmli ve Engelliler Destek Eğitim Dayanışma Sports Club (Bartın)

Supporting children and young people with autism and other special needs, this initiative provides safe and structured access to athletics, table tennis, bocce, shot put, and swimming. The project offers regular, professional training to build confidence, reduce behavioural challenges, and promote equal participation in social life. Through in-kind support for essential clothing, footwear, equipment, and a treadmill, the project aims to ensure safe, high-quality training conditions and reach more children who face barriers to inclusion.

  • “Rainbow Team” – Doğaya Dönüş Sports Club (Kırklareli)

This project expands women’s, children’s, and visually impaired individuals’ access to nature-based sports such as running, hiking, camping, climbing, and indoor wall climbing. By creating safe and inclusive entry points into outdoor sports—especially for girls and children from low-income families—the initiative strengthens confidence, solidarity, and equal opportunities. Alongside sports activities, advocacy efforts will highlight the need for accessible sports facilities in Kırklareli, foster local collaboration, and build a long-term network supporting inclusive participation in sports and nature.

  • “When the Ball Is Ours, Hope Is Ours” – Iskenderun 6 February Sports Club (Hatay)

Working with girls aged 12-18, this project provides essential football equipment—such as balls, cones, training gear, and tracksuits—to ensure equal access to training and competition. The initiative also combines sport with environmental action through three “plogging” events, where participants collect litter while jogging in forest areas affected by recent fires. By linking personal development with environmental awareness, the project strengthens team solidarity, raises public awareness through local media, and encourages other sports clubs to take part in environmental stewardship.

  • Gökyüzü Şutlayıcıları” – Gökyüzü Şutlayıcıları (Adıyaman)

Formed by women coming together after the February 2023 earthquakes, this women’s football team provides a vital space for solidarity, confidence-building, and promoting gender equality in Adıyaman. The project aims to strengthen the team’s capacity by improving access to regular training, equipment, and team activities, while expanding participation to include more local and refugee women. Awareness events, social media outreach, and community engagement will help increase visibility for women’s football and support social cohesion across the community.

Each £3,500 enables us to support a new team.

Both programmes started in Autumn 2025.
