Ensuring equal opportunities for all children, especially in times of crisis, is a vital step toward eliminating inequalities. This vision has driven the work of our grantee partner the Yuva Association (Yuva Derneği), and its partnership with the ÇABAÇAM (Multi-Purpose Early Childhood Education Centre) to bring hope and education to earthquake-affected communities in Kahramanmaraş.
Our Support
After the devastating February 6th earthquakes, Yuva Association, in collaboration with ÇABAÇAM, established the ÇABAÇAM Kahramanmaraş Education Support Unit with our grant support. Located in a container city housing approximately 7,500 people, including 3,000 children, this centre addresses the critical need for early childhood education.
Focusing on children aged 4-6, this centre prepares them for primary school through activities that nurture holistic development. From art and storytelling to drama, music, and sports, these activities enhance their confidence, social skills, and emotional resilience.
The program also includes psychosocial support, creating safe spaces where children can express their emotions and process their experiences. This holistic approach ensures that children not only prepare academically for the next stage of their education but also begin healing from the emotional impacts of the disaster.
Stories of Change
Many children arrived at the centre withdrawn, struggling with trauma that disrupted their ability to communicate and connect. Teachers and caregivers worked tirelessly to create safe, supportive environments where children could rediscover their voices and confidence.
For parents, the impact has been transformative. One of the parents shared her experience: “This place has been a miracle. My son Ayaz, who was once very introverted, is now talkative, sociable, and active. He comes home happy every day.”
The efforts of ÇABAÇAM staff go beyond education – they bring hope and healing to both children and their families. By fostering a sense of normalcy and joy, they are helping rebuild lives and communities.
