Global agriculture faces rising challenges, from declining soil health to reduced productivity and rising costs – all compounded by the impacts of climate and social crises. Regenerative agriculture offers a solution, restoring ecosystems while improving farmers’ livelihoods. Since 2019, the Soil for Life Association (Yaşam için Toprak Derneği) has been at the forefront of this movement in Türkiye.
Our Support
With support from our Regional Recovery Support Program, launched under our Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund, the Soil for Life has been helping mountain villages in Islahiye, Gaziantep, recover after the February 2023 earthquakes. Their work began with assessing key agricultural challenges, including disrupted irrigation caused by shifts in underground water sources.
In Idilli village, they addressed irrigation issues by installing pipelines and drip systems, allowing farmers to revive agriculture. They introduced cover cropping to prevent soil erosion and provide animal feed. Farmers also learned about minimal soil tillage, which helps soil retain water and nutrients.
To support women, a custom fruit-drying unit was installed, making produce preservation easier and more hygienic. For children, a rainwater harvesting system and medicinal plant garden were created at a local school, encouraging learning and offering a positive focus amid earthquake recovery.
These efforts not only address urgent needs but also build lasting resilience – restoring soil health, empowering women, and sparking curiosity and hope in the next generation.
