After the devastating February 2023 earthquakes, the KAMER Women’s Centre Foundation (KAMER Kadın Merkezi Vakfı), founded in 1997, quickly responded to the needs of women and girls in the hardest-hit areas. With years of experience combating gender-based violence and advocating for the rights of women and children, KAMER’s response focused on both immediate relief and long-term recovery.
Our Support
With our support, KAMER delivered much-needed aid to women and children in Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Adıyaman, and Malatya. They established a Support Centre for Women and Children with Disabilities in Hatay, offering a safe space for those in need. KAMER also set up accessible shower and laundry facilities and distributed hygiene kits to address immediate needs.
As the situation evolved, KAMER shifted its focus to the long-term needs of women, particularly those living in poverty and without access to services. During field visits, KAMER reached women in the most vulnerable conditions, many of whom had not received assistance from other organisations.
KAMER provided over 400 legal counselling sessions, helping survivors understand their rights and access protection. Additionally, 1,860 online psychological counselling sessions were offered to 372 women, guiding them through the emotional challenges caused by the disaster.
KAMER also facilitated psycho-education groups, engaging 5,580 women to build emotional resilience and solidarity. These groups helped participants share experiences and find strength through mutual support.
Rebuilding Confidence and Empowering Women
Beyond providing food, hygiene kits, and clothing, KAMER worked to help women regain confidence and reconnect with support networks that would aid their recovery. Their approach addressed both immediate needs and the long-term rebuilding of lives.
After the earthquakes destroyed their offices, KAMER set up container offices in the affected provinces, allowing them to continue their work in these communities. Despite the challenges, KAMER remains committed to helping women and children in disaster-affected areas.
Through their ongoing efforts, KAMER is not just helping women survive but thrive, offering them the tools and support they need to rebuild their lives and actively participate in society.
