“If we can change even one woman’s or one child’s life, that’s a great achievement for us.”
The Association for Women’s Freedom and Equality (Kadın Özgürlük ve Eşitlik Derneği – KÖVED) is turning these words into action in Adana, Türkiye. Through its Women’s Life Centre, KÖVED provides vital support such as psychosocial counselling, skills training, and safe spaces for children to learn and play, becoming a lifeline for women and children in the community.
Beyond immediate assistance, KÖVED is a steadfast advocate for women’s and LGBTI+ rights. By collaborating with local governments, public institutions, and civil society organisations, the association works to eliminate discrimination, improve access to justice, and foster social cohesion.
Our Support
After the devastating February 2023 earthquakes, many women in Adana faced mounting difficulties, including job losses, rising poverty, and greater responsibilities at home. In response, KÖVED established the Women’s Life Centre, supported by our Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund. The centre offers vital services, including:
- Psychosocial and legal counselling to combat violence against women and promote justice.
- Workshops on gender equality, violence prevention, early and forced marriages, and sexual and reproductive health.
- Skills training programs, including literacy courses, job opportunities, and driving lessons to foster independence.
- Safe spaces for children to play, learn, and rebuild their confidence to continue their education.
So far, the centre has reached over 4,000 women and children, providing a foundation for healing and growth in the aftermath of the disaster.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between KÖVED and the Women’s Coalition (Kadın Koalisyonu), an umbrella organisation that unites experienced women’s groups and activists from across Türkiye. The centre in Adana is based on a model developed by the Coalition and its member organisations. Building on the success of this approach, a second centre has been launched in Hatay, in partnership with another local women’s organisation.
Community Ambassadors for Gender Equality
With additional grant support, the association is extending its impact to underserved neighbourhoods in Adana. Through a Community Ambassadors for Gender Equality program, seven women from disadvantaged areas will be trained to become local leaders. These ambassadors will deliver workshops, raise awareness about gender equality and women’s rights, and inspire change in their communities. The program will conclude with a community-wide event to amplify its impact and promote a ripple effect of empowerment.
