The Hatay Symphony Orchestra Culture and Art Association (HSO) is revitalising Hatay’s cultural scene through music and art. Founded in 2019 by local music teachers, conservatory graduates, and students, HSO is the city’s first symphony orchestra, dedicated to enriching the cultural landscape through music and art.
After the devastating earthquakes of 2023, HSO doubled down on its mission to heal and inspire. Believing that art is a fundamental right, HSO is taking music to the people, performing in container cities and across Hatay. As Ali Uğur, the orchestra’s conductor, explains:
“There is hope for Hatay. But hope doesn’t come on its own. To create hope, we chose to take action.”
Our Support
With funding from our Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund’s Regional Recovery Support Program, HSO has expanded its team and strengthened its organisational capacity.
Masterclasses led by renowned artists from the Ankara and Izmir State Opera and Ballet, and weekly rehearsals with 60 local musicians are helping them rebuild skills and confidence. Through outreach concerts and performances, HSO aims to reach 20,000 people, sharing hope and healing through the power of music. Words of an audience member showcase the orchestra’s impact:
“It was incredibly fortunate to have this event after the earthquake. Hearing different styles of music, like opera and symphony, was truly healing for my soul. It cleansed my spirit and made me feel valued.”
Our Institutional Fund’s core funding support has enabled HSO to hire three full-time staff, cover essential costs, and purchase sound equipment and instruments. With guidance from mentoring sessions and expert-led workshops, HSO has worked to improve its financial sustainability, and strengthen its fundraising and communications strategies, enhancing its capacity to reach new audiences.
